NEW DELHI – In a move that will impact thousands of daily commuters and airport-bound travelers, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has officially activated toll collection on a significant section of the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II), popularly referred to as the ‘Duty Flyover.’
This newly operational toll point is situated on the segment that links the bustling regions of Delhi to the state-of-the-art Delhi-Mumbai Expressway (DME) and serves as a critical artery for access to the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport. The activation marks the next phase in the infrastructure project’s rollout, aimed at recouping the massive investment required for its construction and maintenance.
For motorists, the financial implication is direct. The NHAI has set the one-way toll charge for passenger cars at ₹55. For a larger category of vehicles classified as Standard Utility Vehicles (SUPs), which includes many SUVs, the toll has been fixed at ₹85 per passage. The return journey would effectively double this cost for a daily commuter.
In line with the central government’s push for digital and congestion-free transit, the toll will be collected exclusively via FASTag. This means the amount will be automatically deducted from the linked prepaid or savings account as vehicles pass under the electronic gantries. The system is designed for high-speed scanning, minimizing the need for vehicles to stop or even significantly slow down, thus maintaining traffic flow on this high-speed corridor.
The ‘Duty Flyover’ itself is a vital piece of urban infrastructure, designed to decongest inner-city roads and provide a smoother, faster route for traffic heading towards the airport and beyond into Haryana and Rajasthan. While the new toll adds a cost to a previously free section, authorities emphasize that the fees are essential for the upkeep of the expressway and to service the debt taken for its development.
Commuters are advised to ensure their FASTag is active, properly affixed to the vehicle’s windshield, and has sufficient balance to avoid any inconvenience or penalties during their journey on this route.
