India’s Oscars dream for 2026 took an unexpected turn as Homebound failed to secure a nomination in the Best International Feature Film category at the 98th Academy Awards. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the final nominations on January 22, and the Neeraj Ghaywan directed drama did not appear on the list of five contenders.
The film, which had generated significant buzz both at home and overseas, had earlier been India’s official submission and was among the 15 films shortlisted by the Academy. That achievement had sparked optimism that it could bring India its first nomination in this category in over two decades.
Homebound was widely praised for its compelling storytelling, strong performances from Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa and Janhvi Kapoor, and its realistic depiction of social struggles rooted in contemporary India. Lead producers and supporters had hoped the compelling narrative would resonate with Academy voters.
Despite the disappointment, the path Homebound carved through international film festivals and the Oscars shortlist highlighted the growing global recognition of Indian cinema beyond mainstream commercial fare. The film’s selection as India’s official entry underscored its impact, even if it did not secure a nomination in the final round.
Reactions across social media reflected a mix of sadness and pride among fans and film enthusiasts. Many expressed heartbreak that Homebound did not make the final cut, while others emphasised the competitive nature of the category and celebrated the sheer achievement of reaching the Oscars shortlist.
This year’s Best International Feature Film nominations include entries from Brazil, France, Norway, Spain and Tunisia, showcasing a diverse field of global cinema that captured the Academy’s attention.
Although Homebound will not compete for an Oscar in March, its journey through the awards season remains a milestone for the film and its creators, reinforcing India’s ongoing presence in the global storytelling landscape.
