- IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers resigned with immediate effect citing personal reasons.
- Rahul Bhatia, Managing Director of InterGlobe Aviation, will lead the airline temporarily.
- The move comes months after IndiGo faced its worst operational crisis with thousands of flight cancellations.
India’s largest airline, IndiGo, has announced a major leadership change after CEO Pieter Elbers stepped down from his role with immediate effect. The development comes just months after the airline experienced its most severe operational crisis, which triggered widespread scrutiny from regulators and passengers alike.
In an official statement, IndiGo confirmed that Elbers resigned due to personal reasons. The airline’s parent company, InterGlobe Aviation Ltd., said that Managing Director Rahul Bhatia will take charge of the airline’s management on an interim basis until a new chief executive is appointed.
Elbers joined IndiGo as CEO in September 2022 after a long career in global aviation and was credited with guiding the airline through a period of expansion. During his tenure, IndiGo grew significantly, crossed major revenue milestones and expanded its fleet to more than 440 aircraft while placing a historic order for 500 Airbus A320 family jets.
However, the airline faced intense criticism in December 2025 after a major operational meltdown disrupted services across India. Over several days, thousands of flights were cancelled or delayed, leaving more than three lakh passengers stranded at airports across the country. The crisis was linked to issues surrounding the implementation of new pilot duty and rest regulations introduced to reduce fatigue among flight crews.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation later stepped in, imposing penalties and temporarily reducing IndiGo’s winter schedule while asking the airline to introduce corrective measures. Authorities also issued warnings to senior executives and directed the company to provide financial guarantees to ensure operational improvements.
Industry observers say the leadership transition signals a reset for the airline as it works to restore customer confidence and operational stability. Rahul Bhatia, who co founded IndiGo and has been closely associated with its growth over the past two decades, is expected to focus on strengthening operational reliability and corporate culture during the transition period.
As the airline begins the search for a new CEO, the leadership shift comes at a crucial time for India’s fast growing aviation sector. IndiGo continues to dominate the domestic market, but the company now faces the challenge of rebuilding trust and maintaining its position amid rising competition and regulatory scrutiny.
