An international flight operated by IndiGo from London to Mumbai was unexpectedly diverted to Cairo, leaving more than 300 passengers stranded for over eight hours amid airspace restrictions in the Middle East.
The aircraft, identified as flight 6E2, departed from Heathrow Airport in London late on March 8 and was scheduled to arrive in Mumbai the next day. However, during the journey, the flight changed course over the Red Sea region and was redirected to Cairo International Airport.
Sudden Route Change Mid Journey
Flight tracking data showed that the aircraft initially followed its usual path toward India. But while flying near the Red Sea, the plane altered its route and turned toward Cairo, eventually landing there at around 11:51 am IST.
According to IndiGo, the diversion was necessary due to airspace restrictions affecting the region. The airline responded to passenger queries on social media, stating that the decision was taken for safety reasons as certain air routes were unavailable.
Passengers Wait Hours at Cairo Airport
More than 300 passengers, mostly Indian nationals, were left waiting at Cairo airport for several hours after the unexpected landing. Several concerned relatives and passengers took to social media seeking updates about the flight’s status.
The airline later assured travelers that assistance was being provided while the situation was being monitored and alternative arrangements were being evaluated.
Wider Disruptions to Global Flights
The diversion is part of a broader disruption affecting international aviation routes. Ongoing tensions and conflict in parts of the Middle East have led several countries to impose temporary airspace closures and restrictions.
As a result, airlines worldwide have been forced to reroute flights, cancel services, or make technical stops to ensure passenger safety. Aviation authorities and airlines are continuously adjusting flight paths depending on the evolving geopolitical situation.
Impact on Indian Routes
Indian carriers have been among the most affected by the restrictions because many flights between India and Europe pass through Middle Eastern airspace. In recent days, several services connecting major cities have experienced delays, cancellations, or diversions.
Airlines including IndiGo have advised passengers that routes may be longer than usual or subject to last minute changes until airspace conditions stabilize.
