In a landmark diplomatic development, Israel has become the first United Nations member state to formally recognise the Republic of Somaliland as an independent nation, ending more than three decades of diplomatic isolation for the breakaway territory. The announcement was made by Israeli leadership in a mutual declaration signed with Somaliland’s President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, elevating the region’s status on the world stage.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the move as historic and framed it within the broader context of the Abraham Accords, the normalisation agreements with several Arab states originally brokered in 2020. Netanyahu praised Somaliland’s leadership and extended an invitation to President Abdullahi for an official visit to Israel.

Despite this diplomatic breakthrough, the reaction in Washington has so far been cautious. U.S. President Donald Trump, when asked whether the United States would follow Israel’s lead and recognise Somaliland, said he needed to “study it” and admitted he was not yet ready to endorse independence for the region. In remarks to the New York Post, Trump notably questioned global awareness of Somaliland and remained noncommittal on American recognition.

Somaliland’s de facto independence dates back to 1991, when it declared separation from Somalia following years of civil war. The region has maintained its own government, currency, and administrative structures but has long sought international recognition without success until now.

The Israeli decision has triggered sharp criticism from Somalia’s federal government and a coalition of regional and international actors. Mogadishu denounced the recognition as a violation of its territorial sovereignty and pledged to challenge the move through all diplomatic channels. Regional bodies, including the African Union and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, warned that the decision undermines established norms about the sanctity of national borders and risks destabilising the Horn of Africa.

Several Arab and African nations, including Egypt, Turkey, Qatar, and Djibouti, echoed those concerns, reaffirming their support for Somalia’s unity and territorial integrity. Their statements emphasised that unilateral recognition of a breakaway territory sets a “dangerous precedent” with implications beyond this single case.

In Somaliland’s capital of Hargeisa, the announcement was met with celebration and optimism about new opportunities for diplomatic ties and economic cooperation. Somaliland’s leadership has signalled its readiness to deepen relations with Israel and even expressed interest in joining the Abraham Accords framework.

As world powers and regional organisations continue to debate the ramifications of this decision, the spotlight remains on how this historic recognition will reshape political dynamics in the Horn of Africa and influence future global policymaking regarding separatist regions.
