- President’s Rule in Manipur revoked nearly one year after it was imposed.
- Yumnam Khemchand Singh sworn in as Chief Minister as elected governance returns.
- Two deputies from Kuki and Naga communities inducted, signaling inclusive leadership.
Imphal, India President’s Rule in Manipur has been formally lifted, ending nearly a year of direct central administration in the northeastern state and making way for a newly elected government led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Early on February 4, 2026, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs issued an official notification announcing the revocation of President’s Rule with immediate effect. The proclamation, published in the Gazette of India (Extraordinary), was signed by President Droupadi Murmu, underlining the constitutional process prescribed in Article 356.
Later the same day, Yumnam Khemchand Singh, a senior BJP leader and two-time MLA, was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Manipur during a ceremony at Lok Bhavan in Imphal. Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla administered the oath of office in the presence of lawmakers, party leaders, and key figures from the National Democratic Alliance.
The new administration also features representatives from diverse communities in leadership positions. Nemcha Kipgen from the Kuki community and Losii Dikho of the Naga People’s Front took oaths as Deputy Chief Ministers, with Kipgen becoming the first woman to hold the deputy chief minister post in the state.
President’s Rule was first imposed on February 13, 2025, following a breakdown of constitutional machinery after prolonged ethnic unrest. The move came amid intense clashes between the majority Meitei community and the minority Kuki-Zomi groups, which had triggered widespread violence, displacement, and disruptions to law and order across Manipur.
The withdrawal of direct rule highlights a shift back to democratic governance, as the BJP-led coalition moves to restore stability and focus on development. In recent months, party legislators met in New Delhi to elect Singh as the leader of the NDA legislature party, paving the way for the formation of the new government once President’s Rule was revoked.
In his remarks following the oath ceremony, Singh emphasized the government’s commitment to peace, growth, and inclusive progress for all communities in Manipur.
As the state transitions from a year of central administration to locally elected leadership, many residents and political analysts will be watching closely to see how the new government addresses ongoing challenges and works toward long-term stability.
