Manipur is preparing for a major political transition as senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Yumnam Khemchand is heading toward appointment as the state’s next chief minister. The decision comes shortly before the scheduled end of nearly 12 months of President’s Rule, a period during which the northeastern state was governed directly by the central government.

In a key development on Tuesday, BJP legislators elected Yumnam Khemchand as the leader of the party’s legislative wing in the Manipur Assembly. This selection effectively clears the path for the formation of a new state government under his leadership once President’s Rule expires.

President’s Rule was imposed in Manipur in February last year amid severe ethnic clashes and a breakdown of law and order, prompting New Delhi to take direct control of the state administration. Since then, political activity in the assembly was on pause, with no elected government in place.

Yumnam Khemchand brings long experience in state politics. He has been a multiple-term legislator from the Singjamei constituency and has previously served as the Speaker of the Manipur Assembly as well as a cabinet minister in the former state government.

His elevation as the BJP legislature party leader was confirmed at a meeting in the national capital, attended by top party figures and representatives. With this choice, the BJP aims to usher in stability and restore popular governance in Manipur after more than a year under central rule.

The formation of a new state government under Khemchand is widely viewed as a strategic move to address administrative continuity and quell political uncertainty that has persisted since President’s Rule began.
