- Veteran actor alleges he was disinvited from a university event hours before it was scheduled.
- University reportedly told the audience he declined to attend, a claim he rejects.
- Shah links the controversy to broader concerns about free expression and criticism of political climate.
Veteran film and theatre actor Naseeruddin Shah has publicly accused Mumbai University of abruptly cancelling his participation in a cultural event, describing the decision as both disrespectful and unexplained. Shah said he was looking forward to the programme because it offered a chance to engage with students and share his insights from decades in the arts.
In a strongly worded piece published in a national newspaper, the actor revealed that he received communication late on the night of January 31 telling him he was no longer required to attend an event called Jashn-e-Urdu, slated for February 1 by the university’s Urdu department. No reason or apology accompanied the message, he said.
Shah said what compounded his disappointment was the institution’s public message to attendees that he had chosen not to take part. He called that version of events misleading, asserting that he had been informed he was no longer expected at the event, not that he declined the invitation.
The actor also challenged reports that suggested his public comments on national and political matters may have influenced the decision. A senior university figure is reported to have claimed Shah “openly makes statements against the country,” an allegation he disputes. In his article, Shah urged critics to produce an actual instance in which he disparaged India, saying his critiques were directed at policies and leadership, not the nation itself.
Beyond the immediate controversy, Shah’s account touches on deeper themes about freedom of expression and the space for dissenting voices within academic and cultural forums. He wrote about his long experience interacting with young minds and lamented the growing environment of what he described as intolerance toward differing perspectives.
The matter has sparked discussion among artists, educators and commentators, with many questioning whether such decisions discourage open dialogue and robust intellectual exchange.
