• Pakistan says 274 Taliban fighters were killed in recent retaliatory strikes.
• Islamabad warns Kabul to act against militants using Afghan soil.
• Cross border clashes raise fears of a prolonged regional conflict.

A major escalation in hostilities between Pakistan and Afghanistan has triggered fresh geopolitical concerns in South Asia, after Islamabad announced that its military operations resulted in the killing of 274 Taliban fighters.

According to Pakistan’s military leadership, the strikes were carried out in response to what it described as repeated cross border attacks originating from Afghan territory. Officials claimed that militant groups allegedly operating from within Afghanistan were responsible for launching assaults on Pakistani security forces in recent weeks.

The statement was accompanied by a strong diplomatic warning directed at Kabul. Pakistan urged Afghanistan’s Taliban led administration to take decisive action against armed factions that Islamabad believes are using Afghan soil as a base for operations against Pakistani interests. Authorities also stressed that continued inaction could further destabilise bilateral relations between the neighbouring countries.

The latest confrontation follows a series of retaliatory airstrikes and military exchanges along the disputed border regions that have seen rising violence since February 2026. Pakistan has maintained that these operations were intelligence based and aimed at dismantling militant hideouts believed to be linked to groups such as the Tehreek e Taliban Pakistan.

Afghan officials, however, have rejected Islamabad’s claims in the past and accused Pakistan of violating Afghanistan’s sovereignty through air raids that allegedly impacted civilian areas. The Taliban led government has repeatedly warned of a measured response if such military actions continue.

Analysts caution that the intensifying conflict between the two nations could push the fragile relationship into a deeper security crisis if diplomatic efforts fail to reduce tensions. With both sides continuing to trade accusations over militant safe havens and cross border attacks, the situation remains volatile and unpredictable.
