  • Calls it a prepared step toward Viksit Bharat by 2047
  • Emphasises innovation, reforms and long term growth over populism

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday emphasised that the Union Budget 2026 represents a forward looking vision for India’s development and should not be mistaken for a routine bookkeeping exercise.

Speaking in an interview with PTI, the Prime Minister said that none of the budgets presented by his government since 2014 have been created with the mindset of producing a run of the mill “bahi khata” style document. Instead, he described Budget 2026 as a reflection of India’s growing ambition to transform into a developed nation in the coming decades.

Modi asserted that the latest budget is not driven by urgency or compulsion. He described it as a moment of readiness that stems from sustained preparation and inspiration. According to him, the financial roadmap mirrors India’s collective aspiration to move toward long term national growth rather than immediate short term gains.

Highlighting India’s resilience amid global uncertainties, the Prime Minister noted that the country continues to emerge as a bright spot of economic growth even in challenging international conditions. He added that the post pandemic global environment is opening up new opportunities for collaboration in trade and innovation for India.

Modi also explained that the 2026 budget should be seen as the first financial blueprint of the second quarter of the 21st century. He said the policy decisions being implemented today are aimed at laying the foundation for achieving the goal of Viksit Bharat by 2047.

The Union Budget for the financial year 2026 to 2027 was presented in Parliament on February 1 by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. It outlines the government’s fiscal priorities, taxation measures and expenditure plans for the upcoming year, with a strong focus on infrastructure investment, domestic demand and fiscal consolidation.
