- Railway Board sets fare rules for Vande Bharat Sleeper Express with no RAC or waitlist options.
- Minimum chargeable distance fixed at 400 km regardless of actual travel.
- Fares for 3AC, 2AC and 1AC classes are higher compared to existing premium trains.
The Indian Railways has officially declared the fare structure for the upcoming Vande Bharat Sleeper Express as it gears up for launch on long-distance routes. According to a circular issued by the Railway Board in early January 2026, passengers booking this new premium overnight service will pay a minimum fare equivalent to a 400 kilometre journey, even for shorter distances. This move sets the Vande Bharat Sleeper apart from other long-haul services in terms of pricing and booking rules. One of the most notable features of the fare notification is that the train will not offer Reservation Against Cancellation or waitlisted tickets. Only confirmed seats and berths will be issued, ensuring that every booked passenger has a guaranteed spot for the entire journey. The board has made all berths available right from the first day of the advance reservation period, doing away with partial confirmations or provisional bookings that are common in many express trains. The Railway Board’s circular specifies that the minimum chargeable distance for calculating fares is 400 kilometres. For example, a trip in third-tier AC (3AC) will cost Rs 960 for the minimum distance, while second-tier AC (2AC) and first-class AC (1AC) will be priced at Rs 1,240 and Rs 1,520 respectively, before GST is added. For longer distances, such as the nearly 1,000 km Howrah-Guwahati route where the first Vande Bharat Sleeper service is set to run, fares will increase proportionately based on per-kilometre rates. Compared with existing premium services like the Rajdhani Express, the Vande Bharat Sleeper’s ticket prices are slightly higher on a per-kilometre basis. While established services have traditionally offered high-speed overnight travel with meals included, the new sleeper variant brings advanced technology, modern interiors and enhanced safety systems as part of its value proposition. Quota allocations on the Vande Bharat Sleeper Express will be streamlined. The Railway Board has limited reservations to a select set of categories including ladies, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and duty pass holders. Other quotas common in long-distance trains will not be available, and travellers should plan bookings accordingly. Railway officials say digital payment methods are strongly encouraged for ticket purchases, which will also help streamline refund processes if needed. Children’s fare rules remain unchanged from standard practice, and efforts will be made to accommodate eligible passengers in lower berths when possible. With its blend of speed, comfort and a unique fare regime, the Vande Bharat Sleeper Express is poised to redefine overnight rail travel in India. As reservations open and launch dates approach, both rail passengers and industry watchers will be closely following how the new pricing model resonates with travellers across the country.
