  • Indian Railways to invest ₹14,000 crore in maintenance infrastructure for Vande Bharat fleet.
  • New depots and upgrades planned to ensure faster upkeep and improved reliability of trains.
  • Announcement made by Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw responding to parliamentary queries.

The Indian Railways has announced a substantial investment of ₹14,000 crore to enhance maintenance facilities for Vande Bharat trains across the country. The decision marks a major step toward improving the operational readiness and longevity of the nation’s flagship semi-high speed trains.

Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw disclosed the plan during a session in the Rajya Sabha, explaining that the funding will be used to build new maintenance depots and upgrade existing ones to meet the demanding requirements of Vande Bharat services. The focus will be on deploying modern infrastructure that can support both routine and advanced upkeep needs of the train sets running across the network.

Since their induction starting in 2019, Vande Bharat trains have revolutionized rail travel in India with faster speeds, enhanced passenger comfort and improved safety systems. As of now, more than 160 Vande Bharat services featuring chair car configurations are in operation nationwide, and the new investment is expected to further strengthen the backbone of this rapidly expanding fleet.

The enhanced maintenance hubs will be strategically located throughout the rail network to ensure quick turnaround times for servicing and repairs. They will also be equipped to handle technological and mechanical requirements specific to Vande Bharat train sets, which include advanced signalling compatibility, high-speed braking systems, and onboard safety features.

This large-scale investment highlights Indian Railways’ commitment to not only expanding high-speed connectivity but also ensuring dependable service quality. The improved maintenance ecosystem is expected to reduce downtime, support smoother operations and accommodate future growth in the number of Vande Bharat trains on Indian tracks.

Minister Vaishnaw made this announcement in response to questions raised in Parliament about the infrastructure support being rolled out to back the increasing deployment of Vande Bharat services. The initiative is seen as part of a broader strategy to modernize rail assets and align with India’s vision for a more efficient, technology-driven transportation network.

The move is also expected to result in regional employment opportunities linked to the construction and operation of these facilities, as well as improved passenger experiences due to fewer service disruptions and higher system reliability.
