- A 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit near Yilan tonight, shaking large parts of Taiwan.
- This is the second major quake in just a few days, with earlier tremors reported midweek.
- No immediate major damage or casualties reported while assessments continue.
Taiwan was jolted by a powerful earthquake late Saturday, with authorities confirming that a 7.0 magnitude tremor struck off the island’s northeastern coast near Yilan County late at night. The quake was recorded at around 11:05 pm local time and originated approximately 32 kilometers out to sea, according to Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration.
Residents across the island felt strong shaking as the quake spread inland, shaking buildings in the capital Taipei and other urban centers. This tremor comes just days after another significant seismic event struck southeastern Taiwan earlier in the week, underscoring the region’s ongoing seismic activity.
Officials say the thrust of the quake occurred at a depth of around 73 kilometers beneath the sea floor, a depth that likely helped reduce the potential for surface-level destruction. While there have been no confirmed reports of widespread damage or casualties so far, emergency teams have been deployed to conduct thorough damage assessments and check critical infrastructure for signs of stress.
Taiwan lies near the converging boundary of two major tectonic plates, making it one of the most earthquake-prone regions in the world. This positioning on the Pacific Ring of Fire continually exposes the island to seismic hazards, often producing frequent and sometimes powerful earthquakes. Residents and authorities remain vigilant with disaster response measures in place.
Local government units have yet to release a full report on the quake’s impact, but no major disruptions such as tsunami warnings have been issued. The National Fire Agency and other response units are monitoring situations in affected areas while advising the public to stay alert for possible aftershocks.
