In a candid conversation on Unfiltered by Samdish, Vidya Balan discussed the evolving religious identity in India, expressing concern over the country becoming “more polarized” in terms of religion. Balan highlighted that India, historically not defined by religious identities, is now experiencing a shift, which she attributes not only to politics but also to the influence of social media. “We are all lost in this world and looking for an identity, which we don’t have organically, we are looking for things to attach ourselves to,” Balan remarked.
The acclaimed actor shared her personal approach to philanthropy, stating her preference for supporting healthcare, sanitation, and education over religious structures. Despite being deeply spiritual and practicing daily puja, she chooses not to contribute financially to the construction of religious buildings. “If you are building a hospital, a school, or a toilet, I will happily contribute. But not to anymore religious institutions,” she asserted.
Reflecting on the challenges actors face when discussing politics, Balan expressed her apprehension about the backlash and boycotts that often follow political comments made by public figures, particularly on social media. “Politics se bohot darr lagta hai, phir humko ban-van kardege toh… It hasn’t happened with me, thankfully, but now actors have are wary about talking about politics because you don’t know who will get offended,” she explained.
Currently, Vidya Balan stars in the romantic comedy Do Aur Do Pyaar, alongside Pratik Gandhi, where she continues to charm audiences with her versatile acting skills.
