Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir – Widespread demonstrations erupted across the Union Territory after reports emerged that Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in a joint military strike by the United States and Israel, officials said. The protests, held mainly in Shia-majority areas, quickly drew large crowds and strong emotions.

On the second consecutive day of unrest, clashes between protestors and security forces were reported, resulting in at least 14 injuries. Officials confirmed that eight protestors and six security personnel were hurt in confrontations as law enforcement used measured force to disperse crowds in several locations across the Kashmir Valley.

To prevent the situation from escalating further, authorities imposed multiple restrictions across the region, including severe curbs on civilian movement and throttling of mobile internet speeds. Security checkpoints were set up, and access to sensitive areas such as Srinagar’s historic Lal Chowk was tightly controlled by cordons and personnel.

In addition to movement restrictions, government officials decided to close schools and colleges for two days as a precautionary measure amid ongoing protests and safety concerns.

Protestors, many from Shia communities, marched through neighbourhoods carrying portraits and flags, expressing anti-US and anti-Israel sentiments. Demonstrations were reported at key points including Bemina, Budgam, and other parts of Srinagar, with some groups voicing solidarity with Iran and condemnation of the reported attack.

The unrest also saw increased security deployments, with police and paramilitary forces stationed throughout the Valley to deter large gatherings and potential clashes. Officials repeatedly appealed for peace and restraint, urging communities to avoid violence and help maintain public order.

The developments mark a significant escalation in local tensions following a major geopolitical event that has reverberated well beyond Iran’s borders, uniting emotions across sections of the population in Jammu and Kashmir.
