  • West Bengal government launches Mahakal Mahatirtha with a 216-foot Mahakal idol at Siliguri.
  • The complex is expected to host up to 100,000 devotees daily and boost religious tourism locally and globally.
  • CM Mamata Banerjee also announces an international convention centre to enhance business and cultural events.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has unveiled an ambitious spiritual tourism project in Siliguri, announcing the creation of the Mahakal Mahatirtha temple complex that will feature what is planned as the world’s tallest Mahakal avatar of Lord Shiva. The foundation stone was laid at Matigara amid an interfaith gathering of community and religious leaders.

The heart of the project is a 216-foot tall structure, including a 108-foot bronze statue of Lord Shiva, set to rise prominently over a 17.41-acre site. Once complete, the temple complex aims to attract pilgrims and tourists not just from India but across the world, with accommodations to handle up to 100,000 devotees daily.

In her address, Banerjee emphasised how the development will strengthen the spiritual fabric linking the plains of Bengal with its hills. She noted that the presence of an iconic Mahakal temple in Darjeeling would complement this new landmark and create a broader cultural and devotional corridor in northern Bengal.

The chief minister also announced plans for an international convention centre in Siliguri designed to attract business events, conferences and boost economic activity alongside cultural tourism. The government has already identified land for this initiative and intends to provide it to a developer at no cost to accelerate progress.

Officials believe the Mahakal Mahatirtha project will transform Siliguri’s profile from being merely a transit point between India’s northeast and the rest of the country into a dynamic pilgrimage and tourism hub. By marrying faith, commerce and cultural events, the initiative may create jobs, stimulate local economies and give a fresh identity to the region’s religious tourism footprint.

Construction tenders have already been issued, with land officially handed over to project authorities. With an estimated completion timeline of around two and a half years, the Mahakal Mahatirtha complex is now one of the most closely watched temple developments in recent Indian infrastructure news.
