A devastating train collision in southern Spain has claimed at least 21 lives and left more than 70 people injured, authorities have confirmed. The accident unfolded on Sunday evening when two high-speed passenger trains collided near the town of Adamuz in Córdoba province, about 360 kilometers south of Madrid.

Officials say the crash occurred as a train traveling from Málaga to Madrid derailed and crossed onto an adjacent track, slamming into another high-speed service bound for Huelva. Both trains were carrying hundreds of passengers at the time, and emergency teams responded quickly, working through the night to free those trapped in mangled carriages and provide urgent medical care.

Rescue crews have transported dozens of wounded passengers to nearby hospitals, with at least 30 reported in serious condition. The wreckage and twisted metal have made access extremely challenging for first responders, who continued operations into Monday.

Spanish Transport Minister Oscar Puente described the tragedy as “strangely inexplicable,” noting the collision took place on a recently renovated stretch of straight track and involved a relatively new train. This unexpected breakdown of safety has raised pressing questions as investigators comb through evidence to determine what went wrong.

The nation’s prime minister expressed profound sorrow over the incident on social media, calling it a “night of deep pain” for Spain. Rail services between Madrid and key Andalusian cities have been suspended while authorities support families of the victims and continue their inquiry into the cause of the catastrophic crash.

Emergency support stations have been set up at major cities along the affected routes to assist relatives of those on the trains, and national rail operators have activated crisis support teams for passengers and concerned families.

As Spain grapples with one of its most shocking rail disasters in years, the transportation sector and authorities face intense scrutiny to explain how two high-speed trains could collide on a modern, heavily trafficked route.
