- Delhi Police tells court AI Summit protest may be inspired by Nepal Gen Z movement
- Four Youth Congress workers sent to five day police custody
- Protest allegedly planned to disrupt global summit attended by international delegates
A fresh controversy has emerged after members of the Indian Youth Congress staged a shirtless protest during a high profile AI Summit held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.
During court proceedings on February 21, Delhi Police claimed that the unusual demonstration carried out inside the summit venue appeared to have drawn inspiration from the recent Gen Z led protests in Nepal. Authorities described the incident as part of a broader and potentially coordinated plan, prompting further investigation into the protest’s origins and planning.
According to officials, around ten Youth Congress activists entered the exhibition hall during the summit and removed their shirts while raising slogans targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Some protesters were reportedly carrying white T shirts featuring printed images and messages related to the India United States trade deal. Security personnel stationed at the venue quickly intervened and escorted the demonstrators out of the premises.
Following the disruption, four individuals associated with the youth wing were arrested and produced before a Delhi court. The Patiala House Court subsequently granted police custody of the accused for five days after investigators argued that the protest required deeper scrutiny, including examination of digital evidence and coordination between participants.
Police further alleged that the act may have been intended to create an adverse impression on an international platform attended by global technology leaders and delegates. The prosecution described the matter as an important investigation that warranted custodial interrogation of those involved.
Legal representatives for the accused, however, maintained that the protest was peaceful in nature and fell within the democratic right to dissent. They argued that the charges were excessive and politically motivated.
The protest has since triggered sharp reactions across the political spectrum, with criticism emerging from both ruling party leaders and opposition allies who termed the method of demonstration inappropriate for an event of global significance.
The incident continues to remain under investigation as authorities examine possible links and planning behind the protest that briefly disrupted proceedings at the international AI Summit.
