  • Rapid Expansion: India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by 8.2% in Q2 of FY25, the highest rate in six quarters.
  • Manufacturing Powerhouse: The growth was significantly fueled by a remarkable 9.7% surge in the manufacturing sector.
  • Strong Fundamentals: Robust Gross Fixed Capital Formation (GFCF) indicates a healthy uptick in investment and infrastructure development.

NEW DELHI – India’s economy has kicked off the 2024-25 fiscal year with a blockbuster performance, registering a stunning 8.2% growth in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for the first quarter (April-June). This figure, released by the National Statistical Office (NSO), not only surpasses most analyst expectations but also represents the fastest pace of economic expansion in the last six quarters, signaling a powerful post-pandemic recovery trajectory.

The surge is largely attributed to an outstanding show by the manufacturing sector, which exploded with a 9.7% growth rate compared to the same period last year. This indicates a significant revitalization of factory output and industrial activity, moving beyond the services-led growth that had dominated earlier phases of the recovery.

Beyond manufacturing, the data reveals a strengthening of the economy’s core foundations. The Gross Fixed Capital Formation (GFCF), a key indicator of investment in physical assets like infrastructure and machinery, saw a sharp increase. This suggests that businesses are ramping up capacity and the government’s continued push on capital expenditure is yielding tangible results, creating a virtuous cycle of investment and growth.

“The robust 8.2% GDP growth in Q1 2024-25, driven by a double-digit growth in gross fixed capital formation, is indeed heartening,” stated the Finance Ministry in a recent economic review. This sentiment is echoed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), which had projected a growth rate of 7.3% for the full fiscal year—a forecast that now seems cautiously optimistic in the wake of this strong Q2 data.

This impressive growth cements India’s status as the fastest-growing major economy globally, outpacing its peers. For policymakers and markets alike, the data provides a solid buffer against global economic headwinds and inflationary pressures, setting a confident stage for sustained economic momentum through the rest of the year.
