Himachal Pradesh on Edge: Dramatic Landslide Threatens Chaukar Village, Houses Evacuated

  • A significant landslide triggered by heavy rains struck Chaukar village in Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district, severing a key road.
  • At least five residential houses are reported to be at direct risk, prompting immediate safety assessments and evacuations if necessary.
  • The incident underscores the increasing frequency of such geological hazards in the Himalayan region, especially during the monsoon season.

CHAUKAR, HIMACHAL PRADESH – A terrifying landslide, captured in a widely circulated video, slammed into a mountainside in Chaukar village, Mandi district, on Thursday, sending massive volumes of earth and debris onto a critical roadway and placing multiple homes in peril.

The incident, attributed to the relentless heavy monsoon rains battering the region, has left local authorities and disaster response teams on high alert. Initial reports indicate that at least five houses are situated precariously close to the slide zone and are considered to be at high risk.

The viral video of the event paints a chilling picture. It shows a large section of the hillside, saturated with water, suddenly giving way. A river of mud, rocks, and uprooted vegetation can be seen thundering down the slope, completely swallowing the paved road below in a matter of seconds and sending clouds of dust into the air.

While immediate reports thankfully indicate no loss of life, the primary concern remains the structural safety of the homes in the landslide’s path. Local administration officials have swiftly cordoned off the area to prevent any accidental movement into the danger zone.

“Teams are on the ground assessing the stability of the hillside and the condition of the threatened houses,” a district official stated. “The families have been alerted and are being moved to safer locations as a precautionary measure. Our first priority is everyone’s safety.”

The landslide has also effectively cut off road connectivity to parts of the village, disrupting daily life and posing a challenge for relief efforts. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local emergency services are understood to be en route to the location to begin clearance operations and conduct a thorough damage assessment.

This event in Chaukar is the latest in a series of monsoon-induced disasters to hit the ecologically fragile state of Himachal Pradesh this season. It highlights the ongoing challenges of land erosion and geological instability faced by communities in the Himalayan foothills, a phenomenon experts warn may be intensifying.
