India’s aviation sector is preparing for fresh competition as the Ministry of Civil Aviation has recently issued regulatory green lights to three prospective airlines. Al Hind Air and FlyExpress were granted no-objection certificates in late December, enabling them to progress toward launching commercial services. Shankh Air, a carrier based in Uttar Pradesh, had secured its NOC earlier and is targeting operations in 2026.
The approvals form part of a broader government strategy to disrupt the long-standing duopoly in the domestic market. Currently, two major airline groups control a substantial share of India’s passenger traffic, prompting concerns among policymakers and industry watchers about limited competition and higher fares. The introduction of new carriers seeks to widen consumer choice and stimulate more competitive pricing and service levels across routes.
Each airline now faces a multistep process before passengers can book tickets. Securing an Air Operator Certificate from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation remains a key requirement, involving audits, aircraft induction and proving flights. Only after these milestones will the carriers be permitted to begin regular flight operations.
Al Hind Air is backed by the Kerala-based Alhind Group and is expected to focus on regional domestic routes initially. FlyExpress, headquartered in Telangana, plans to leverage both passenger and logistics demand with a network that includes smaller cities. Shankh Air aims to serve key destinations, including cities across Uttar Pradesh and beyond, with plans to scale up its fleet in subsequent phases.
Industry observers note that while the entry of these carriers represents a significant regulatory shift, breaking the entrenched market positions of established airlines will be challenging. These new entrants must secure financing, aircraft leases, trained crews and operational infrastructure under tight timelines to become viable competitors.
The government’s move comes amid heightened focus on strengthening regional connectivity and increasing operational resilience after earlier disruptions in India’s busiest airline networks. If successful, the addition of these airlines could reshape India’s civil aviation sector, offering travelers more options and potentially improving service standards over time.
