Is Artificial Intelligence a Threat to Jobs? Here’s What Nirmala Sitharaman Has to Say

Posted by

Could the rise of artificial intelligence mean fewer jobs for people? This question has sparked debate around the world, but Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman offers a reassuring perspective. Amid concerns that AI could lead to unemployment, Sitharaman highlights a crucial point: the technology still needs human minds to function.

During a recent discussion with Hindustan Times, the focus was not only on the latest budget but also on the broader state of the economy, including the hot topic of employment. When the conversation steered towards the impact of AI, particularly in sectors attracting hefty investments due to their high efficiency and technological advancement, Sitharaman shared her insights. She acknowledged the pressing issue of unemployment but countered the fear surrounding AI, stating, “AI also requires human intervention. It is not going to operate on its own.” This perspective brings a fresh outlook, especially considering the sustained growth of the Indian economy, contrasting with other economies.

Sitharaman also reflected on the significance of the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative launched during 2020’s challenging times of lockdowns, emphasizing the importance of striving for self-reliance. The dialogue with the Finance Minister unveils a multi-layered debate on investment, job creation, and the quest for meaningful and rewarding employment, suggesting that AI might not be the job-stealer it’s often made out to be.
