MANIPUR – In a grim reminder of the volatile security situation in the Northeastern state, two jawans of the Assam Rifles were killed in a targeted attack by unidentified gunmen on Tuesday. The ambush, which took place in the Tengnoupal district, has sent shockwaves through the security establishment and prompted a massive retaliatory operation.
According to official reports, the incident occurred around 11:30 AM when a convoy of the paramilitary force was on a routine patrol duty. As the vehicles passed through a secluded stretch near the border town of Moreh, militants lying in wait opened indiscriminate fire with automatic weapons. The assault was concentrated on a specific vehicle, which bore the brunt of the attack.
The soldiers, caught in the hail of bullets, valiantly attempted to retaliate but were overwhelmed. Despite the best efforts of their colleagues, two jawans, identified as Havildar Owais and Rifleman Alamin, succumbed to their grievous injuries. A third soldier sustained serious wounds and was immediately evacuated to a nearby military hospital for emergency medical treatment.
The region of Tengnoupal, particularly the area surrounding Moreh, is a strategically sensitive zone bordering Myanmar. It has been a hotbed of militant activity and has witnessed a significant surge in violence since the ethnic clashes that erupted in Manipur in May of this year. Security experts suggest that the rugged, forested terrain provides ample cover for insurgent groups to launch such hit-and-run attacks.
In the immediate aftermath of the assault, additional columns of security forces were rushed to the scene. A large-scale combing and search operation (CASO) is currently underway across the nearby hills and forests to locate and neutralize the attackers. Roads have been sealed, and a high alert has been declared across the district.
Senior police and military officials have condemned the attack, vowing a “swift and strong” response. An official spokesperson stated, “We pay homage to our bravehearts who made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty. The perpetrators of this cowardly act will be brought to justice. Operations are ongoing.”
This attack marks a significant escalation in the targeting of security forces in the region and raises serious concerns about the evolving security dynamics in Manipur, where state and central forces have been working tirelessly to restore peace and order.
