VARANASI: In a move set to significantly augment rail connectivity in the Purvanchal region, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday flagged off four new train services from Varanasi. The virtual inauguration, a part of ongoing infrastructure development initiatives, underscores a focused effort to modernize transport links from the ancient city, which also happens to be the PM’s parliamentary constituency.
The newly launched services include the Varanasi-New Delhi Vande Bharat Express, a semi-high-speed offering that will slash travel time between the spiritual capital and the national capital. Alongside, the Varanasi-Ayodhya Cantt-Jamnagar Express was inaugurated, creating a vital direct link for pilgrims and travelers. To address demand on a popular southern route, the Varanasi-SMVT Bengaluru Express (Weekly) has been introduced. Furthermore, the Varanasi-Darbhanga Express (Weekly) has been extended to run up to Samastipur, aiming to provide seamless connectivity in Bihar.
According to official figures, the cumulative operational launch cost for these four services to the Railways stands at an estimated Rs. 3.38 crore. This investment covers the initial rollout and logistics for the new and extended routes.
Railway officials highlight that these additions are strategically timed to decongest existing trains, cater to rising passenger demand, and promote economic and religious tourism. The direct train to Ayodhya, in particular, is expected to see heavy footfall given the city’s rising prominence as a major pilgrimage center.
The launches reinforce Varanasi’s evolving role as a pivotal rail hub in eastern India. Analysts see this as a continued push to enhance regional mobility, linking key economic and cultural centers with faster and more efficient rail options, thereby fostering greater integration and accessibility for the people of Uttar Pradesh and beyond.
