  • The moment quickly went viral after Altman and another AI CEO avoided holding hands
  • Altman later clarified that he was unsure about what participants were expected to do on stage

A seemingly lighthearted on stage moment involving Sam Altman and Narendra Modi during the India AI Impact Summit 2026 has unexpectedly turned into one of the most talked about highlights from the global technology gathering.

The incident took place at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi during a group photograph session where several global technology leaders had joined the Prime Minister following the summit’s opening ceremony. As part of a symbolic show of unity, leaders were encouraged to hold hands and raise them together while posing for cameras.

While most participants followed the gesture, Altman and Dario Amodei appeared briefly uncertain about what was expected of them. Instead of joining hands like others on stage, the two CEOs raised their fists, creating a moment that quickly drew attention online and sparked widespread reactions across social media platforms.

The viral clip prompted speculation about possible tension between the two leaders, especially given the ongoing rivalry between OpenAI and Anthropic, both of which are major players in the artificial intelligence space.

However, Altman later addressed the situation and dismissed any deeper meaning behind the awkward exchange. Speaking about the moment, he admitted that he was unsure about the instructions being followed during the photo opportunity.

“I didn’t know what was happening,” Altman said later, adding that he felt confused when his hand was raised during the gesture on stage.

The brief hesitation has since become symbolic of the growing competition within the global AI ecosystem. Amodei, who previously worked at OpenAI, went on to co found Anthropic in 2021 after differences regarding the future direction and safety approach to artificial intelligence development.

Despite the viral buzz surrounding the incident, the summit itself marked a significant step in India’s push to position itself as a leading hub for artificial intelligence innovation and global cooperation in emerging technologies.

The India AI Impact Summit 2026, held from February 16 to 20 in New Delhi, brought together technology leaders, policymakers and researchers from across the world to discuss infrastructure investment, AI governance and collaborative frameworks for responsible innovation in the Global South.

What began as a simple unity pose has now turned into an internet talking point, highlighting how even small unscripted moments can dominate global conversations in an increasingly competitive tech landscape.
