A tragic development unfolded near a political meeting led by Vijay in Salem district of Tamil Nadu after a second death was reported in connection with the gathering organised by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam on Friday.
According to police officials, a 50 year old porter worker identified as Murugan allegedly died after consuming poison mixed with alcohol near the meeting venue. His body was later discovered in front of the event area. Authorities stated that the man had travelled to Salem and reportedly left behind a letter pointing to personal and family issues before taking the extreme step.
The incident occurred just hours after another attendee at the same rally fainted during the programme and died while being taken to hospital. Police confirmed that the earlier victim was a 37 year old man who had collapsed at the political gathering addressed by Vijay.
Following the two back to back deaths, officials have registered a case and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the second incident. The deceased man’s family has reached Salem Government Hospital to receive the body after postmortem procedures.
The latest fatality has intensified scrutiny around arrangements and safety at large public meetings, particularly political rallies that attract massive crowds. The developments have also triggered fresh debate among political observers over the management of such high turnout events in Tamil Nadu.
Authorities are expected to release further details as the investigation progresses.
