The Indian government is set to transform how Aadhaar identity checks are done by hotels, event venues, and other private entities. Under a new policy approved by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), businesses will no longer be permitted to collect physical photocopies or scanned images of Aadhaar cards from customers during routine verification processes.
For years, handing over a photocopy of an Aadhaar card has been a familiar step when checking in at hotels or registering for services. But authorities have concluded that this long-standing practice puts citizens’ sensitive personal data at risk. Aadhaar photocopies often reveal full names, addresses, Aadhaar numbers, and other details that can be easily stored insecurely on devices or paper files. This widespread handling of private information has raised serious privacy concerns among regulators.
To curb potential misuse and reinforce data protection, the new rule prohibits hotels and similar businesses from taking or storing physical Aadhaar copies. Instead, organisations that need to verify identity will have to register with the UIDAI and adopt secure, digital verification methods. Once registered, these entities can authenticate guests or patrons by scanning the QR code printed on Aadhaar cards or using an approved Aadhaar mobile app. These technologies confirm identity without exposing or retaining complete personal details.
The QR code already embedded on every Aadhaar card contains encrypted identity information. When scanned through an official app or approved device, it quickly confirms a person’s identity while keeping sensitive data secure. The forthcoming Aadhaar application being developed by UIDAI is expected to make digital checks even smoother, offering features that allow individuals to share only the specific information needed for a service, such as name or age, without revealing the entire Aadhaar number.
This digital shift is part of a broader push by the government to modernise verification processes and protect individuals’ data in an increasingly online world. By reducing reliance on paper copies and centralising authentication through registered channels, authorities aim to lower the risk of identity theft and data leakage.
The updated rule must still be formally notified, and UIDAI is yet to announce an exact rollout date. But early signals indicate rapid adoption, with many large hospitality chains and businesses already preparing to switch to QR and app-based Aadhaar checks. For residents, the change means less hassle at check-ins and greater control over how their personal information is shared.
In essence, India is moving towards a safer, paperless verification system that strengthens privacy and reduces the risks associated with storing and distributing physical identity documents. The long-standing practice of giving out Aadhaar photocopies at hotels may soon become a thing of the past as digital solutions take centre stage.
