Bangladesh has entered a new political phase after interim administration head Muhammad Yunus announced his resignation in a televised address to the nation on Monday. The move officially brings an end to the caretaker government that had been steering the country since the 2024 political uprising.
The 85 year old Nobel Peace Prize winner confirmed that the interim administration was stepping down after completing what he described as its historic responsibility of restoring democratic processes in the country. Yunus urged citizens to protect the democratic values that had begun to take root during the transitional period, including freedom of speech and fundamental rights.
The resignation comes shortly after the Bangladesh Nationalist Party secured a decisive parliamentary majority in the recently concluded general elections. The victory paves the way for BNP leader Tarique Rahman to take oath as the country’s next Prime Minister and form a new government in Dhaka.
Muhammad Yunus had assumed leadership of the interim government on August 8, 2024, following widespread protests that led to the fall of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The caretaker administration was tasked with implementing key reforms and ensuring a free and fair electoral process to restore democratic governance in the country.
With the interim government’s term now set to conclude on February 17, 2026, Bangladesh prepares for the swearing in of its newly elected leadership. Yunus also extended his congratulations to the BNP and its allies for their electoral success, signaling a smooth transfer of power after months of political transition.
The formation of a new government is expected to mark the beginning of a fresh political chapter as the nation moves beyond its caretaker phase towards a fully elected administration.
