  • Delhi’s air quality remains in the ‘Very Poor’ category for the second day straight, shrouding the city in a toxic haze.
  • A combination of adverse meteorological conditions, including calm winds, is trapping pollutants close to the ground.
  • Authorities have issued health advisories, urging vulnerable groups to minimize outdoor exposure due to the dangerous pollution levels.

NEW DELHI – The national capital is grappling with a severe and persistent air quality crisis, as a choking toxic haze settled over the city for the second straight day on Tuesday. The iconic skyline of Delhi remained shrouded in a grim, grey blanket, with air quality indices (AQI) consistently registering in the ‘Very Poor’ range, causing significant concern among citizens and authorities alike.

The alarming situation has been attributed to a combination of factors, primarily unfavorable meteorological conditions. According to environmental monitoring agencies, a significant drop in wind speed has prevented the effective dispersion of airborne pollutants. This atmospheric stagnation acts like a lid, trapping a dangerous mix of particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), nitrogen dioxide, and other noxious gases close to the ground, creating a visible and hazardous smog.

Health experts have reiterated severe risks associated with prolonged exposure to such polluted air. The microscopic PM2.5 particles, which are small enough to infiltrate the bloodstream through the lungs, can trigger a host of respiratory and cardiovascular issues. The vulnerable, including children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing conditions like asthma and heart disease, have been advised to take extreme caution.

While the contribution of local pollution sources—including vehicle emissions and industrial output—remains a constant challenge, the current spike is largely weather-driven. The lack of western disturbances, which typically help in flushing out pollutants, has exacerbated the situation, leaving millions of citizens awaiting a meteorological shift for relief.

As Delhi continues to gasp for clean air, the ongoing episode serves as a stark reminder of the city’s perennial battle with pollution. With immediate relief contingent on a change in weather patterns, the focus for now remains on heeding public health advisories and minimizing exposure to the dangerous outdoor air.
