BENGUET, Philippines – A critical aerial relief operation for victims of a powerful typhoon ended in tragedy on Friday when a Philippine National Police (PNP) helicopter crashed in a remote, mountainous region, claiming the lives of all six individuals aboard.

The aircraft was undertaking a mission to deliver essential supplies to areas isolated by Typhoon Doksuri when it went down in the province of Benguet. According to official statements from the PNP, the crash site was located near the town of Kapangan. The Bell 409 helicopter was reported to have lost contact with air traffic control during its flight.

“All souls on board perished in the crash,” a police spokesperson confirmed in a somber press briefing. The victims included the pilot, co-pilot, and four other police personnel who were part of the dedicated relief team. Their identities are being withheld pending notification of their families.

The helicopter was a key asset in “Operation Doksuri,” the large-scale government effort to provide aid and assess damage in the wake of the typhoon. The storm, known locally as Egay, had previously battered the northern Philippines with destructive winds and torrential rains, triggering widespread flooding and landslides that disrupted the lives of hundreds of thousands.

This tragic event casts a shadow over the ongoing relief endeavors, highlighting the extreme risks that first responders voluntarily face in the immediate aftermath of a natural disaster. Flying in complex, storm-altered terrain with unpredictable weather patterns presents a formidable challenge even for experienced crews.

As the nation grieves the loss of lives in service of others, the Philippine National Police have grounded other aircraft of the same model as a precautionary measure. A full and comprehensive investigation has been launched to determine the precise cause of the catastrophic crash.
