  • Siddaramaiah asks Centre to protect farmers in India US trade negotiations
  • Opposition raises concerns over possible agricultural import impact
  • Debate grows over fairness of global trade terms for Indian farmers

The ongoing discussions around the proposed India US trade agreement have triggered fresh political reactions across the country, with Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah stepping in to voice concerns over its potential impact on the agricultural sector.

Addressing the issue, Siddaramaiah appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi not to compromise the interests of Indian farmers during the negotiations with the United States. His statement comes amid mounting criticism from opposition leaders who fear that easing trade barriers could expose domestic farmers to global competition and affect their livelihoods.

Backing concerns raised by Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, the Karnataka Chief Minister highlighted the need for transparency and caution in finalising any trade terms that may influence agricultural imports or pricing structures in India. Political leaders opposing the agreement argue that reduced tariffs on foreign farm products could place Indian producers at a disadvantage due to differences in subsidies and infrastructure between the two countries.

Farmer organisations and political parties have also expressed apprehension that the agreement might allow subsidised agricultural goods from the United States to enter Indian markets, potentially lowering domestic prices and affecting rural incomes. While the Union government has maintained that key staples remain protected, critics continue to demand clarity on the pact’s long term implications for the farming community.

As discussions continue, the India US trade deal is quickly emerging as a politically sensitive issue, with farmer welfare becoming a central point of debate in shaping the country’s future trade policy.
