Dubbed ‘E0’, this new fuel option provides a alternative for drivers wary of the government’s push towards widespread E20 ethanol-blended petrol.
The initiative arrives as the nation accelerates its transition to E20 fuel—a blend of 20% ethanol with 80% petrol—as part of a broader strategy to cut carbon emissions and reduce reliance on costly crude oil imports. While environmentally strategic, the adoption of E20 has been met with mixed reactions from vehicle owners.
Many have reported a noticeable drop in fuel mileage, a primary concern for cost-conscious consumers. Automotive experts suggest that because ethanol has a lower energy density than pure gasoline, engines may burn more fuel to produce the same power, directly impacting kilometers per liter. Furthermore, concerns persist about the long-term effects of higher ethanol concentrations on engine components, especially in older vehicles not designed for such blends, including potential issues with corrosion and rubber seals.
IndianOil’s solution, E0 petrol, is essentially 100% pure petrol with zero ethanol content. This offering is strategically aimed at a specific segment of the market.
“This isn’t a reversal of our ethanol blending program, but a complementary product for a niche need,” an IndianOil official stated. “Owners of classic cars, high-performance sports cars, and certain models of two-wheelers and cars manufactured before a certain period have expressed a desire for a non-ethanol option. E0 caters to that demand and ensures we have a fuel for every type of customer.”
The company has clarified that E0 fuel will be available only at specific retail outlets and not as a nationwide replacement for E20. Motorists are advised to check their vehicle owner’s manual to see what fuel grade is recommended by their manufacturer. For modern vehicles designed and certified for E20, the blended fuel remains the standard and approved choice.
