New insights have emerged in the shocking lynching of a Hindu garment worker in Bangladesh, as investigators challenge initial claims that the attack was driven by alleged blasphemy. According to police and family statements, mounting tensions over job roles and workplace disagreements are now seen as the more likely trigger for the mob violence.
Dipu Chandra Das, in his mid-twenties, was employed at a large garment factory in the Mymensingh district when he was violently attacked by a group of colleagues and local workers. The incident occurred during a period of heightened unrest and has drawn widespread attention. Early reports suggested the crowd accused him of insulting religious sentiments as the catalyst for the brutal assault.
However, authorities from the Rapid Action Battalion say there is no direct evidence that Das made any derogatory remarks about religion, and no witness has authenticated claims of blasphemy. Investigators say the allegations appear to have stemmed from word of mouth rather than factual proof, and efforts to trace any offensive comments online or in person have yielded nothing.
Family members of the victim tell a different story that focuses on workplace dynamics. On the day of the attack, tensions inside the factory escalated and Das was allegedly pressured to resign, after which he was handed over to an enraged crowd waiting outside the premises. Despite offering an apology, he was subjected to violence that continued until he succumbed to his injuries.
