A Green Tribute to Mothers
On June 5, 2025, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan launched the second phase of the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign in New Delhi, coinciding with World Environment Day. This initiative encourages citizens across India to plant a tree in honour of their mothers, combining environmental conservation with personal tribute. The campaign aims to foster a deeper connection between individuals and nature, promoting sustainable practices and enhancing the nation’s green cover.
Expansion of the Initiative
Building upon the success of the initial phase, the campaign has expanded nationwide with an ambitious target of planting 10 crore trees. The initiative emphasizes community involvement, with participation from schools, residential welfare associations (RWAs), and corporate offices. Volunteers are encouraged to nurture the planted trees, ensuring they grow into lasting symbols of gratitude and environmental stewardship.
Technological Integration for Monitoring
To enhance the campaign’s effectiveness, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has introduced a dedicated mobile application. The app allows users to document their tree plantation activities by uploading photos, providing details about the tree species, and tracking its growth over time. This digital platform aims to engage a broader audience, especially the youth, in environmental conservation efforts.
State-Level Participation
Various states have actively participated in the campaign, organizing tree plantation drives and awareness programs. In Mizoram, schools conducted district-level initiatives in collaboration with local educational institutions and the forest department. Similarly, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation launched the second phase of its eco-initiative, planting saplings across schools, parks, and health centres, while also promoting a plastic-free environment through awareness rallies.
Cultural Significance of the Campaign
The “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 2.0” campaign holds cultural significance, as it resonates with the sentiments expressed in the 111th episode of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Mann Ki Baat.” The initiative underscores the importance of mothers in our lives and draws a parallel between nurturing a tree and nurturing the earth. By involving educational institutions, including madrasas, the campaign aims to instil a sense of ecological responsibility among students and communities.
Conclusion
The launch of “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 2.0” marks a significant step towards integrating environmental consciousness with personal and cultural values. Through widespread participation and technological integration, the campaign aspires to create a lasting impact on India’s green landscape, ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.
