Ratan Tata, the esteemed industrialist and philanthropist, has announced an ambitious project that promises to catapult Assam onto the global stage. Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd is gearing up to establish a state-of-the-art semiconductor manufacturing unit in Assam. With a whopping investment of Rs 27,000 crore, the facility aims to produce an impressive 48 million chips daily.
Ratan Tata, in a post on X, shared his optimism about the project’s potential to revolutionize Assam’s industrial landscape. “The investments being made in Assam will not only transform the state in terms of complex cancer care but also mark its entry as a major player in the sophisticated semiconductor industry,” he stated. He extended his gratitude to Assam’s Chief Minister, Mr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, for his unwavering support and visionary leadership that paved the way for this monumental development.
In response, Chief Minister Sarma expressed his gratitude towards Ratan Tata for his confidence in Assam’s potential and for the Tata Group’s commitment to nurturing a developed Assam. The discussions between Sarma and the Tata leadership have led to plans for a skill development centre within the premises of the semiconductor facility in Jagiroad. This initiative aims to equip the youth of the East with cutting-edge skills in Artificial Intelligence, semiconductors, and electronics, thereby ensuring their employability in the semiconductor facility.
Already, 1,500 youths from Assam, predominantly women, are receiving training at Tata facilities near Bangalore. This initiative is set to position them as leaders once the semiconductor unit begins operations in 2025. “This mega game-changing investment by the Tata Group showcases remarkable conviction and faith in our state,” remarked Sarma, emphasizing the transformative impact of the project on Assam’s economic and technological landscape.
With the first chips expected to roll out by 2025, the establishment of the Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd facility heralds a new era for Assam. It not only signifies a significant leap in the state’s industrial capabilities but also places Assam at the forefront of the global semiconductor industry.
