FIR Filed Against Arvind Kejriwal Over Yamuna Water Remarks: What’s the Controversy?

Posted by

  • An FIR has been registered against former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal over his statements on Yamuna river water and allegations against the Haryana government.
  • Haryana’s Revenue Minister Vipul Goel criticized Kejriwal, accusing him of misleading the public and covering up Delhi’s failure in cleaning the Yamuna.
  • Kejriwal, on the same day, met the Election Commission, alleging voter suppression and election-related violence.

Why Has Kejriwal Been Booked?

The legal trouble for AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal started after he made remarks regarding the quality of Yamuna water being supplied to Delhi. The Haryana government responded by filing a criminal complaint, stating that his claims were false and intended to create panic. The FIR, lodged at Shahabad Police Station in Kurukshetra, was based on a court order and included charges under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Haryana Minister Vipul Goel stated that the water supplied to Delhi is the same as that consumed by top leaders like the Prime Minister and President. He accused Kejriwal of trying to gain political advantage before elections by misleading people. Goel also blamed the Delhi government for the poor condition of the Yamuna, claiming that only 17 out of 37 sewage treatment plants in the city were functional.

Election Controversy Adds to the Tension

While facing this legal action, Kejriwal also approached the Election Commission, alleging incidents of violence and voter suppression ahead of the upcoming Delhi elections. He claimed that voters were being threatened, and their fingers could be forcibly inked to prevent them from casting their votes.

The Election Commission assured AAP leaders of strict action to ensure fair elections. The timing of both the FIR and Kejriwal’s meeting with the Election Commission has sparked political debates, with AAP calling it an attempt to silence opposition voices before elections.

As the legal and political battle continues, the case highlights the growing tensions between Delhi and Haryana over water management and election strategies. What impact will this have on the upcoming polls? Only time will tell.
