Ektaa Kapoor Clarifies Stance After ALTT Ban
In the wake of the Indian government’s crackdown on 25 OTT platforms—including ALTT, Ullu, and Desiflix—for hosting “obscene and vulgar content,” renowned television producer Ektaa Kapoor has issued a strong clarification distancing herself from ALTT.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Kapoor emphasized that neither she nor her mother, Shobha Kapoor, have been associated with ALTT since June 2021. Her statement read:
“Balaji Telefilms Limited, listed on the BSE and NSE, is a professionally run media organization. Following the recent amalgamation of ALT Digital Media Entertainment Ltd., it operates ALTT effective June 20, 2025. Media reports suggesting our association with ALTT are incorrect—we stepped down in June 2021. Any claims otherwise are false.”
She further asserted that Balaji Telefilms adheres to all legal regulations and maintains high corporate governance standards.
Government’s Strict Action Against Vulgar OTT Content
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, in collaboration with the Ministries of Home Affairs, Women & Child Development, Electronics & IT, and Law, imposed the ban after multiple complaints about explicit and inappropriate content.
The banned platforms include:
- ALTT
- ULLU
- Desiflix
- Big Shots App
- HotX VIP
- MoodX
- NeonX VIP
Officials stated that these apps violated IT laws and promoted content deemed harmful to societal morals. The decision followed consultations with industry bodies like FICCI and CII, as well as child and women’s rights experts.
What’s Next?
Under the IT Act, 2000, and IT Rules, 2021, intermediaries have been directed to block access to these platforms. The move signals the government’s stricter stance on regulating digital content, especially concerning women’s safety and child protection.
As debates around censorship and creative freedom continue, Ektaa Kapoor’s swift disassociation highlights the growing scrutiny OTT platforms face in India.
