PATNA: In a move that solidifies his reputation as one of India’s most enduring political figures, Janata Dal (United) president Nitish Kumar is on the verge of creating history by becoming the Chief Minister of Bihar for an unprecedented tenth time. The path was cleared on Sunday after the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) unanimously elected him as the leader of their legislature party in the state.
This decisive political turn marks the latest chapter in Kumar’s long and often unpredictable career, coming merely hours after he formally severed ties with the opposition ‘Mahagathbandhan’—an alliance comprising the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Congress—and realigned his JD(U) with the BJP-led NDA.
The crucial meeting to elect the leader was held at the official residence of the Chief Minister. The decision was swiftly reached, with senior BJP leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi promptly proposing Kumar’s name for the top post. The proposal was met with unanimous approval from all NDA allies, signaling a consolidated front.
“The NDA has unanimously chosen Nitish Kumar as its leader. A delegation of NDA leaders will soon meet the Governor to formally stake claim to form the government,” Sushil Kumar Modi announced to the press following the meeting.
The swift political realignment has sent shockwaves through Bihar’s political landscape, underscoring Kumar’s pivotal role as a key player whose allegiance can redefine the state’s power structure. His return to the NDA fold is seen as a significant boost for the ruling coalition at the national level, ahead of the upcoming general elections.
The stage is now set for the swearing-in ceremony, which is scheduled to take place at the Raj Bhavan at 5 PM on Sunday. All eyes will be on Patna as Nitish Kumar, often referred to as ‘Sushaasan Babu’ (Mr. Good Governance) by his supporters, prepares to take oath once again, further extending his complex and record-setting political legacy in the state.
