- Prithviraj Chavan rejects calls for apology over his remarks on Operation Sindoor and insists on his right to question military actions.
- The BJP criticises him sharply, accusing the Congress of undermining the armed forces and national security.
- Political tensions have escalated as debate over military operations and free speech intensifies in Parliament.
Senior Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan ignited fresh political controversy on Wednesday by standing firm on his comments about Operation Sindoor, despite intense criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party. When asked whether he would retract his statement or apologise, Chavan declined, saying there was no reason to apologise and that asking questions is protected under the Constitution.
Chavan’s remarks stem from his assertion that India faced a defeat on the very first day of Operation Sindoor, a military response launched earlier this year after the deadly Pahalgam terror attack. He described the aerial engagement as unfavourable to Indian forces and questioned some aspects of how the operation unfolded, raising eyebrows across the political spectrum.
The BJP was swift in its reaction, with party leaders condemning the Congress veteran’s statements as an insult to the Indian armed forces. Officials accused Chavan and his party of repeatedly undermining military actions, framing his comments as harmful to national pride and security morale.
In the unfolding political battle, BJP spokespeople have said such remarks are unacceptable and have urged action against Chavan, while stressing that respect for the nation’s defence forces is essential. The exchange has intensified political debate in Parliament, where the incident is set to be a point of contention in upcoming sessions.
Chavan, however, has remained unyielding, arguing that robust discussion and scrutiny of government decisions are key features of democratic discourse. His position underscores wider debates about political accountability, national security narratives, and the limits of political criticism in India’s charged political environment.
