  • MP Chief Minister Mohan Yadav criticises Mamata Banerjee for allegedly obstructing an ED action.
  • Yadav says cooperation with constitutional bodies is a basic duty of any state leader.
  • The clash unfolds amid heightened tensions over ED raids linked to alleged money laundering and coal smuggling.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav intensified political rhetoric on Friday by publicly criticising West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s behaviour during an ongoing Enforcement Directorate operation in Kolkata.

Addressing reporters in Bhopal, Yadav said that cooperation with constitutional and central investigative bodies like the Enforcement Directorate is a fundamental obligation for any chief minister. He maintained that a state leader’s interference in such probes is neither appropriate nor in keeping with constitutional responsibilities.

The controversy erupted after the ED conducted searches in Kolkata at locations tied to the Indian Political Action Committee as part of a money laundering investigation linked to alleged coal smuggling. The agency has alleged that Mamata Banerjee, accompanied by state police personnel, visited the residence of I-PAC co-founder Pratik Jain during the raid and removed key documents and electronic devices, leading to claims of obstruction of the investigation. The ED says the actions hampered its ability to carry out the search as mandated under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. Banerjee has vehemently rejected these accusations, describing the ED’s actions as politically motivated and asserting that the agency aimed to seize sensitive party documents and strategic materials ahead of the upcoming West Bengal assembly elections. She insists her actions were lawful and done in her capacity as leader of the Trinamool Congress, not as an attempt to disrupt the investigation. The dispute has escalated into a broader political clash, with opposition leaders and central figures trading sharp remarks over constitutional duties versus alleged overreach. In response to the raid and subsequent allegations, the ED has also moved the Calcutta High Court, seeking judicial review of the alleged interference, while Mamata Banerjee has filed complaints against the central agency, framing the controversy as part of a larger battle over democratic rights and political freedoms. As political tensions rise in the run-up to key state elections, this episode adds another layer to debates over federal authority, administrative boundaries, and the conduct expected from elected representatives in India’s parliamentary democracy.
