- BJP becomes the lead party in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation after nearly 30 years.
- The party also won a commanding mandate in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad local bodies.
- Rivals led by Thackerays and Pawars suffer major defeats across key urban centres.
MUMBAI and PUNE: The Bharatiya Janata Party has delivered a landmark victory in Maharashtra’s civic polls, breaking the decades-long grip of the Shiv Sena in Mumbai and dominating contests in Pune and neighbouring urban areas. The results, declared after a high turnout, point to a significant realignment in local politics across the state.
In the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections, the BJP emerged as the single largest party, ending almost 30 years of dominance by the undivided Shiv Sena. With well over half of the 227 seats in its column, the party now stands poised to lead Asia’s richest civic body, whose annual budget exceeds ₹74,000 crore. The win was powered by strong performances across key wards, reflecting voter support for the BJP’s governance agenda.
The outcome in Pune delivered an equally impressive result for the saffron party. In the Pune Municipal Corporation, the BJP secured an overwhelming majority of the 165 seats, decisively outpacing both factions of the Nationalist Congress Party. The ruling party in Pune for much of the past decade, the NCP struggled to mount a challenge, leaving analysts to note a dramatic shift in voter mood in this major urban centre. Nearby Pimpri-Chinchwad also saw the BJP extend its advantage, strengthening its footprint in the western Maharashtra urban belt.
Senior BJP leaders celebrated the results as a clear endorsement of their development-oriented platform. The party’s strategy appeared to resonate with voters seeking robust urban governance, infrastructure expansion, and economic growth, even as traditional identity-based appeals waned. Together with allies including the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction, the BJP’s Mahayuti alliance secured commanding leads in multiple civic bodies across Maharashtra.
For opposition heavyweights, the polls delivered sobering news. The efforts to unite rival factions under the Thackeray banner in Mumbai failed to translate into electoral success, as the BJP’s surge shifted the political narrative in the city. In Pune, the divided Pawar lineage could not stave off the BJP’s momentum, underscoring the challenges facing the NCP factions.
With victories consolidated in other municipal corporations, the results point to a broader transformation in Maharashtra’s urban political landscape. As attention now turns to governance and implementation of policy promises, the civic poll verdict is likely to shape the strategies of major parties ahead of future state and national contests.
