India and France have taken another significant step towards strengthening their long standing partnership as Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted French President Emmanuel Macron during his official visit to India on Tuesday.
During bilateral discussions, Modi highlighted the deep trust and shared values that form the foundation of India France ties. He described the partnership as one that continues to evolve beyond traditional defence cooperation into areas such as trade technology energy and global security. The Prime Minister also stressed that both nations remain firmly committed to eliminating terrorism from its roots through collective international efforts.
The meeting comes at a time when geopolitical challenges are reshaping global alliances. Both leaders underlined that the India France partnership plays an important role in ensuring stability and progress in the current uncertain global environment. Macron echoed similar sentiments and described the bilateral relationship as a Special Global Strategic Partnership with growing ambitions across multiple sectors.
Apart from security cooperation, discussions also focused on expanding collaboration in key industries including aerospace nuclear energy rare earth minerals and high speed rail infrastructure. The leaders virtually inaugurated a helicopter assembly facility in Karnataka which marks India’s first private sector helicopter production line developed through a joint initiative between Tata Advanced Systems and Airbus.
Economic engagement between the two countries has witnessed steady growth in recent years. Bilateral trade crossed 15 billion US dollars in the fiscal year ending March 2025 making France India’s third largest trading partner within the European Union. Defence collaboration continues to remain at the core of the relationship with India already operating Rafale fighter aircraft acquired from France.
As both countries look ahead, the visit is expected to further deepen cooperation across innovation manufacturing and global peace initiatives while reinforcing their joint commitment towards combating terrorism and promoting regional stability.
