French President Emmanuel Macron has dismissed criticism surrounding the Rafale fighter jet agreement with India, asserting that the defence partnership directly contributes to making the country stronger. His remarks came during his ongoing visit to India, where defence cooperation remains a central focus of bilateral discussions.

Responding to questions about political concerns related to the Rafale procurement, Macron stated that he does not understand how the agreement could be criticised when it enhances India’s strategic capabilities. He highlighted that the deal not only strengthens military preparedness but also deepens the long standing defence relationship between India and France while creating employment opportunities within India.

The French President also expressed strong support for India’s ambition to co produce Rafale fighter jets domestically. According to him, increasing local manufacturing and incorporating Indian components into defence platforms aligns with the future direction of global defence collaboration. France has indicated its commitment to ensuring maximum industrial participation from India in upcoming projects linked to the Rafale programme.

The Rafale agreement is part of a broader strategic partnership between the two countries, which includes cooperation in defence manufacturing and emerging technologies. India has already inducted 36 Rafale fighter jets into its Air Force and ordered 26 naval variants to strengthen maritime defence capabilities.

Officials from both nations have described the expected procurement of an additional 114 Rafale aircraft as a significant step forward in bilateral defence ties. Reports suggest that a large portion of these jets could be manufactured in India through joint ventures, supporting the government’s Make in India initiative and expanding domestic aerospace capabilities.

Macron’s statements underline France’s continued commitment to India’s national security priorities and signal a deepening of strategic cooperation amid evolving geopolitical challenges in the region.
