- Centre plans nationwide free HPV vaccination for girls aged 9 to 14
- Programme aims to prevent cervical cancer through early immunisation
- Vaccines to be provided at schools and government health centres
In a significant public health development, the Government of India is planning to roll out free Human Papillomavirus vaccination for adolescent girls across the country this year. The proposed initiative will be implemented under the Universal Immunisation Programme and is expected to focus on girls between the ages of 9 and 14.
The nationwide campaign is aimed at preventing cervical cancer, one of the most common cancers affecting women in India. Medical experts have long highlighted that early vaccination against HPV can drastically reduce the risk of developing cervical cancer later in life. The vaccine works by protecting against strains of the virus that are responsible for the majority of such cancer cases among women.
Officials indicate that eligible beneficiaries will receive the vaccine through schools or nearby government health centres as part of a phased rollout plan. Training of frontline healthcare workers and awareness initiatives are also being prepared to ensure the programme reaches the intended population effectively.
At present, free HPV vaccination in India has largely been limited to select state level programmes and pilot campaigns. Most families have had to depend on private healthcare providers, where the vaccine can cost several thousand rupees per dose. A nationwide rollout is expected to bridge this access gap and make preventive care more affordable for millions of young girls.
The vaccination drive aligns with the government’s broader commitment announced in the Union Budget 2024 to promote preventive healthcare for women and reduce cancer related mortality. Once fully implemented, the initiative could mark a turning point in India’s long term fight against cervical cancer by ensuring early protection for future generations.
