In a landmark decision on Wednesday, an Illinois state judge ruled former President Donald Trump ineligible for the state’s primary ballot, citing his involvement in an insurrection. This ruling, issued by Judge Tracie R. Porter of the State Circuit Court in Cook County, marks Illinois as the third state to take such action against Trump, intensifying the need for a definitive ruling from the US Supreme Court on Trump’s eligibility across more than 30 states.
The judgment comes amidst the early stages of voting for Illinois’ March election, casting uncertainty over the process. Judge Porter’s directive to the State Board of Elections was clear: “Donald J. Trump shall be removed from the ballot for the general primary election on March 19, 2024, or cause any votes cast for him to be suppressed,” correcting what she identified as an error in the board’s initial decision to keep Trump on the ballot.
