A month-long Design and Technical Development Workshop on Natural Dyeing Craft has been inaugurated in Sarikushi, Nongpho, Ri-Bhoi District, Meghalaya, following approval from the Ministry of Textiles’ Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicraft), Government of India. The workshop, organized by M/s Pratikshya, an NGO based in Assam, aims to train local artisans in creating eco-friendly, innovative designs using traditional natural dyeing techniques.
Workshop Objectives
The main objective of the workshop is to introduce artisans to:
- New designs and fusion items in line with market demands.
- Eco-friendly practices that promote sustainable textile production.
- Enhanced skills through the guidance of expert designers and master craftspersons.
Participants will also gain knowledge of improved toolkits and techniques to further refine their craft, ensuring that the products meet both domestic and national markets’ expectations.
Key Contributors
- Shrishti Purwar, an empanelled designer with the Ministry of Textiles, has been appointed to lead the design training.
- Ms. Rupali, a renowned local master craftswoman, will assist participants in honing their skills and producing high-quality items.
The workshop specifically targets 30 local craftswomen from Scheduled Tribes residing in remote areas of Ri-Bhoi. It seeks to preserve traditional dyeing techniques while providing these artisans with opportunities to establish sustainable businesses.
