  • A cyclonic storm is forming over the Bay of Bengal and is expected to intensify in the next 48 hours.
  • Odisha and West Bengal are on high alert, with forecasts predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall from October 27.
  • The IMD has advised fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea and has warned of potential disruptions.

BHUBANESWAR/KOLKATA – A fresh weather disturbance is gathering strength over the Bay of Bengal, putting the eastern coastal states of India on high alert. According to the latest bulletin from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a cyclonic circulation is likely to concentrate into a depression, potentially intensifying into a cyclonic storm in the coming days.

The system is projected to track northwestwards, making its presence felt along the coasts of Odisha and West Bengal. The primary impact is expected to be felt from Friday, October 27, onwards, with weather models indicating widespread and heavy rainfall across the region.

“The conditions are becoming favourable for the further intensification of the system. We are closely monitoring its movement and will issue updates accordingly,” an IMD official stated. The department has highlighted the likelihood of squally weather, with wind speeds potentially reaching 60-70 kmph gusting to 80 kmph over the central Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas by October 26.

In response to the forecast, authorities in both states have initiated precautionary measures. Fishermen have been strongly advised not to venture into the deep sea from October 26. The advisory extends to those already at sea, who have been called upon to return to the coast by the evening of October 25.

Residents in low-lying and coastal areas are being urged to stay informed through official channels. The potential for heavy downpours raises concerns about waterlogging in urban areas and possible disruptions to daily life, including travel. The state governments are reportedly preparing disaster response teams to handle any eventualities that may arise from the impending severe weather conditions.

As the situation develops, AlwaysFirst News will continue to provide timely updates and crucial information directly from the IMD and state disaster management authorities.
