  • The ruling BJP and the opposition Congress secured two seats each in the recently concluded Assam Legislative Assembly by-elections.
  • Key victories for the BJP came from Bhabanipur and Tamulpur, while the Congress consolidated its hold on Dibrugarh and Mariani.
  • The 2-2 split verdict is being viewed as a significant political message from the electorate ahead of the next general elections.

GUWAHATI – The political temperature in Assam remained at a steady simmer as the results for the four assembly bypolls were declared, culminating in a dead heat between the state’s primary political heavyweights. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress have evenly split the contested seats, with each party bagging two constituencies in a verdict that offers no clear dominance.

The by-elections, held to fill vacancies in the legislative assembly, were closely watched as a barometer of public sentiment towards the incumbent government. For the BJP, retaining its stronghold was paramount, while the Congress aimed to demonstrate a resilient opposition front. The final tally, however, has painted a picture of a sharply divided electorate.

The BJP secured its victories in the Bhabanipur and Tamulpur seats. In Bhabanipur, candidate Phanidhar Talukdar managed to defend the seat for the party. A significant win for the ruling coalition came from Tamulpur, where candidate Jolen Daimary emerged triumphant, a result that strengthens the BJP’s position in the Bodoland Territorial Region.

On the other side of the political aisle, the Congress party put up a strong fight, successfully clinching the Dibrugarh and Mariani seats. The victory in Mariani was particularly notable, with candidate Rupjyoti Kurmi retaining the constituency. Similarly, in Dibrugarh, the Congress candidate secured the win, ensuring the party maintains its representation from this key region.

Political analysts are dissecting the 2-2 outcome as a reflection of the current political dynamics in the state. While the BJP maintains its ground, the Congress’s ability to hold onto its seats signals a continued presence in the opposition. This split verdict ensures that both parties will head back to the drawing board, recalibrating their strategies as they prepare for the next major electoral battle, with neither able to claim a decisive upper hand from this round of bypolls.
