The promotion, confirmed by official sources, comes swiftly on the heels of his acquittal by a special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court in the 2008 Malegaon blasts case, bringing a formal end to a 12-year professional limbo for the officer.

The special NIA court in Mumbai had exonerated Purohit and six other accused, including Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur, on September 30th, citing a lack of evidence.
