Historic Trade Deal Opens NZ Market to Indian Goods and Expands Opportunities for Students and Professionals

  • All Indian exports to New Zealand will be duty-free, lifting tariffs on every product line once the FTA is in force.
  • Students and professionals gain improved mobility, including easier post-study work visas and skilled work permits.
  • New Zealand commits to major investments and broader market access, with expanded cooperation in services and bilateral trade growth.

India and New Zealand have formalized a sweeping free trade agreement that is set to reshape economic engagement between the two nations. Negotiations that began in early 2025 concluded with both sides agreeing to a comprehensive pact designed to open markets, enhance services cooperation, and expand people-to-people links.

At the heart of the agreement is zero-duty access for 100 percent of Indian exports to New Zealand. Once the trade deal takes effect, Indian goods ranging from textiles and engineering products to pharmaceuticals and farm commodities will enter the New Zealand market without customs tariffs. This unprecedented market access is expected to benefit a wide cross-section of Indian exporters, including micro, small and medium enterprises that rely on competitive pricing abroad.

The pact also delivers significant advantages for Indian students and professionals. Student mobility provisions come with flexible post-study work rights, allowing graduates in key disciplines to pursue employment opportunities overseas. Additionally, the deal includes streamlined temporary work visas for skilled Indian workers in sectors such as IT, engineering, healthcare, and education, alongside support for cultural professions like yoga and culinary arts.

Beyond goods and mobility, the agreement extends into services and investment. New Zealand’s offer covers access in more than 100 service categories, encompassing information technology, business services, and tourism. Both governments have underscored plans for increased collaboration in trade facilitation and market development. Moreover, Wellington has pledged to encourage up to $20 billion in long-term investment in India, targeted at manufacturing, infrastructure, innovation, and services growth.

While the FTA opens doors in many sectors, it also includes protections for sensitive domestic industries. Certain agricultural and dairy products are excluded from tariff eliminations or are subject to quota or price safeguards to support local producers.

Analysts consider the deal to be a strategic milestone for both nations, aligning with India’s broader economic vision and New Zealand’s efforts to diversify trade ties. The pact is expected to spur a marked increase in two-way exchange of goods and services, strengthen job markets, and deepen people-to-people connections as well as investment and innovation linkages.
